Jane's Walk 2014

On Saturday, May 3 Janice & I, along with fifty-or-so other neighbourhood prowlers took part in the 2014 Burnaby North Jane's Walk. If you have not taken part in a Jane's Walk previously you may want to slot it into your calendar for next year. Most communities have a Jane's Walk on the first Saturday in May.

The namesake for the outing is Jane Jane Jacobs. She was an activist with an interest in city planning and author of The Death and Life of Great American Cities. Jacobs believed in neighbourhoods where local residents knew best how to improve their own communities.

Jane's Walks were started by a group in Toronto and have spread around the world to cities, as far as Tel Aviv, Berlin and Sao Paulo.

This year in Burnaby the walk was hosted by The Heights Neighbourhood Association and you can read more about the walk linking to Jennifer Moreau's article in Burnaby Now.

These outings in the community are rewarding on many levels. We meet each other, discover common interests, enjoy the history, hear stories of people and events as they shape our communities, and much more. We have shared our walk with family and friends on several occasions and more stories come to the surface with each conversation.

We're already looking forward to Hats Off Day in Burnaby on June 7, Lynn Valley Days in North Vancouver on May 30 & 31, the 5th annual Edgemont Village Car Show on July 27, and to numerous other community events and celebrations. I will keep encouraging everyone to get out here. Enjoy the neighbourhood outside your home.
